I'm Garrett Genereux — brain cancer survivor, father, husband, climber, educator, and Certified Cancer Journey Coach.
I know what it's like to get a diagnosis that stops the world. I also know what it takes to find solid ground again — not by returning to who you were, but by becoming clearer on who you are.
That experience is the foundation of everything I do as a coach. I don't offer scripts or silver linings. I offer tools, honest conversation, and a space where you can actually think — about what you want, what you're afraid of, and what's possible from here.
My coaching certification is through The Cancer Journey Institute, a program recognized by the International Coaching Federation. But more than any credential, what I bring is this: I've sat where you're sitting. And I've found a way forward.
My cancer journey
In March 2020 — right as the world was shutting down — I was diagnosed with a grade 3 primary brain tumor that was about the size of an avocado (MRI photo below). A week later I had the resection surgery, followed by what I call "bonus surgeries" due to a few complications along the way. By late July 2020 I was able to begin radiation alongside oral chemotherapy. After radiation wrapped up, I continued with cycles of oral chemotherapy for another full year. Since then, my surveillance MRIs have been stable — something I am deeply and daily grateful for.
My family
My family is the best part of my life! My wife and I are raising two daughters who love sports, love the outdoors, and keep us on our toes in the best way possible.
Our home
Our family lives in Central Oregon, with Smith Rock only a quick drive away, the Cascades out the back door, and trails in every direction. It's a pretty good home base for when I can't sit still!
My hobbies
If it happens outside, then I'm probably into it. I climb, trail run, backpack (with the family), mountain bike, and generally will say yes to whatever the mountains' seasonal offerings are. I also coach our daughters' sports teams — a role that has earned me the official title of Captain Crazy, which I wear with complete pride.

I do a little rock climbing guiding with one of the amazing local services at Smith Rock State Park.
